Call Backs: Wednesday, January 11th @ 6:00-9:00

*Plan to arrive by 6pm on the night of your audition. Everyone will dance prior to singing. People might be asked to read after singing.

Show Dates

March 17th-April 2nd.
Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00 and Sundays at 2:00 at the East Hawaii Cultural Center (EHCC). HEART might add Thursday performances the second and third weekend.

Requirements

All auditionees must be 14 years of age or older and must be available for all performances.

Preparing For Your Audition

  1. All Auditionees: Be prepared to dance at the audition. Please wear clothes you can move in.

  2. All Auditionees for Principal Roles: Please prepare 16 bars (1-2 minutes) of a musical theatre song that shows off your voice. Please bring a karaoke track cued up or be prepared to sing a cappella. A pianist will not be present.

  3. Scenes will be read at call backs. If you would like script pages/scenes/sides in advance feel free to email the director at larry@hearthilo.org and request them. Some people might be asked to read at the open call.

What if I can't make it to auditions?

If you are not able to make the auditions - and still want to be considered, please contact Larry and submit a self-taped audition by Tuesday, January 10th at 6:00PM. For audition material and guidelines please email the director at larry@hearthilo.org ASAP.

Principle Roles

EMMA NOLAN - Teenager in Indiana. A reluctant poster child for LGTBQ+ youth. Very smart. A bit of a tomboy quality. Wears their heart on their sleeve. Not your typical leading lady. Must be a strong actor and singer with underdog energy and a charming sense of awkward/anxious humour. Ability to play guitar an asset but not a requirement. Female identifying - Vocal range: F3 - E5. Strong soloist - Needs to have a strong mix belt.


DEE DEE ALLEN - Broadway diva. A huge ego to match her huge talent. Hilariously self-involved but yearns to do something good for someone other than herself. Known for her strong Broadway belt vocals and large stage presence. Jaded with relationships so does not believe in true love until she meets Mr. Hawkins. Strong actor and singer. Late 30’s-60’s. Female identifying. Vocal range: E3 - D5. Actor needs to have a strong belt or a very strong mix belt.


BARRY GLICKMAN - A self-involved Broadway actor eager for celebrity activism to save his flailing career! A Drama Desk award winner and a bit impulsive, he can't help but make a scene everywhere he goes. Completely politically incorrect and doesn't know it, Barry finds a kindred spirit in Emma, taking her under his wing. In longing to give her the prom he never had, he guides her to be true to herself, and proud of who she is. Vocal range: D3- A4. Actor needs to have a strong belt.


TRENT OLIVER - Pretentious Juilliard graduate recently cast in the non-Equity tour of Godspell. Handsome, charming, funny and loves to hear himself speak. Strong actor/singer/mover. 30’s-40’s. Male identifying. Vocal range: C3- Ab4. Actor will require a large vocal range.


ANGIE - A long running ensemble member in the Broadway production of Chicago. Jaded Fosse girl with a heart of gold. Strong actor/singer/dancer - flexibility an asset. Late 18+. Female identifying.


ALYSSA GREENE - A cheerleader and top student. Secretly Emma’s girlfriend. Faces constant pressure from her mother and friends. A little miss perfect who chafes under the pressure and isn’t quite as perfect as she seems. Must be a strong actor, singer and mover. Female identifying. Vocal range: Ab 3 - Eb5. Strong soloist.


MRS. GREENE - Alyssa’s intimidating, conservative, single mother. The head of the PTA. Knows deep down that her daughter Alyssa is struggling with her identity. She is too afraid to face the reality because she fears her daughter will face a hard life. Strong actor. Late 30’s-50’s. Female identifying. Vocal range: A3 - C5. Primarily ensemble singing. Vocal range: Ab3 - E5


R. HAWKINS: Any ethnicity, 30s–50s, High Baritone. A small-town principal. Easily flustered. Strait-laced. A Broadway enthusiast. Good singer. PRINCIPAL.


SHELDON SAPERSTEIN - A charismatic press agent who works for both Dee Dee and Barry. Dry wit a must. Great character actor.Female, Male OR Non-Binary identifying. Vocal range: Open.


SHELBY/ENSEMBLE - Popular cheerleader at school. Kaylee’s second in command, and Kevin’s girlfriend. Bullies, but eventually learns to accept Emma. Strong singer/dancer. Female identifying.


KAYLEE/ENSEMBLE - Head cheerleader and lead mean girl. Nick’s girlfriend. Every girl wants to be her, and every guy wants to date her. Bullies, but eventually learns to accept Emma. Strong singer/ dancer. Female identifying. Vocal range top: Wide range.
 

NICK/ENSEMBLE - Popular jock at school. Kaylee’s boyfriend. Incredibly handsome - every guy wants to be him, and every girl wants to be with him. Bullies, but eventually learns to accept Emma. Strong singer/dancer. Male identifying . Vocal range: Actor needs to have an F4.


KEVIN/ENSEMBLE - Jock at school and Shelby’s boyfriend. Nicks right hand and the class clown. Bullies, but eventually learns to accept Emma. Strong singer/dancer. Male identifying:. Vocal range: Actor needs to have a G4.


ENSEMBLE - Dancers and Singers of differing ages/genders playing High School students and various adult members of the community.
