'I HEART Summer' is a summer program that runs over the course of two months in preparation for a final performance for kids aged 10-18. During these two months, they work together five days a week, learning vocal training from Grayson Mento and Kyra Gomes, dance and show choreography from Jason Aiwohi-Tomlin and Aleah Kay, and blocking from director Larry Reitzer. For the 2023 season, they put on 'Grease Jr. The Musical'.
For 2 months, every Monday and Wednesday, the 'I Heart Singing' group would work for 2 to 3 hours on vocal techniques and healthy voice practices under the guidance of Grayson Mento. In every class, they would prepare and work on a solo piece as well as group numbers from shows like Rent, Hamilton, and High School Musical, to perform at their final showcase for friends and family.
HEART Fosse Workshops were about teaching the language of the renowned choreographer Bob Fosse to the community of Hilo. Teaching this style covered the vocabulary of fosse, from gentle hip rolls, to sensual snapping, sharp and isolated movements, and most importantly, connected with the dance and theater community here in Hilo. Workshops were lead by Michael Misita, Jason Aiwohi-Tomlin, and Aleah Kay.
